South Daytona is a small, residential, and business-friendly community bordering the Halifax River. It is located only minutes away from the World-acclaimed Atlantic Ocean beaches that attract more than eight million tourists a year. Well kept residential areas, excellent schools, beautiful public parks, abundant shopping and dining opportunities, and a responsive city government make South Daytona a great place to live, work and play.
2023: South Daytona is the place to be. In January, we continued with Flag Football. It was great to see so many of our families at the games. Thank you for stopping by the Citizens Alert Hot Dog Wagon to support our volunteers. The Drive-In Movie Nights were well attended and full of fellowship and entertainment.
In early February, we held a ribbon cutting event at the Piggotte Community Center to celebrate the renovations made over the last year. The entire center has been updated with new flooring, paint, and a new feel. It would make the perfect location for your next event. That evening we also held a Civics 101 Class presented by the Volusia League of Cities Vice-President Nancy Miller, Mayor of Daytona Beach Shores. During the Open House, multiple groups comprised of city staff and volunteer organizations such as the Citizens Alert Council, CERT, Historic Society and more set up display tables and spoke to residents about their particular department, skillset or organization.
Also in February, I had the honor to speak at the annual Mayor’s Breakfast at the Port Orange South Daytona Chamber of Commerce. This event, hosted by the Chamber, invites the Mayors of Port Orange (Don Burnette), Daytona Beach Shores (Nancy Miller) and South Daytona to present a state of the city address to the Chamber members. The highlight of the event was the recognition of the nominated First Responders from each of the 3 cities. Please join me in congratulating our First Responders of the year, Police Officer Casey Gaffney, and Firefighter Steven Evancho for all of their hard work serving the citizens of South Daytona.
Chapter 112, Part III of the Florida Statutes, "Code of Ethics for Public Officers, and Employees." Which states in part in : 112.311 (3) "It is likewise essential that the people be free to seek redress of their grievances and express their opinions to all government officials on current issues and past or pending legislative and executive actions at every level of government. In order to preserve and maintain the integrity of the governmental process, it is necessary that the identity, expenditures, and activities of those persons who regularly engage in efforts to persuade public officials to take specific actions, either by direct communication with such officials or by solicitation of others to engage in such efforts, be regularly disclosed to the people."
